First things first. Kevin Bacon. I picked the name for this blog months before that stupid advert came out. I'm not changing it for him, I don't see why I should. Also, I kind of feel connected to him now.
So it's another June, another even numbered year, and another one of these. If it was a leap year it would be the Euros, but as it is it's the World Cup, which is twice as long and therefore twice as good. I'm afraid I still struggle with the whole design thing. The text looks a bit large, but when I reduce it it looks a bit small, so I just don't know what to do.
Doing a blog at all, never mind a poorly designed one, is starting to seem a little old-fashioned in these days of Twitter and other more concise social media. Frankly this comes as a relief. When I first did a blog it was quite cutting edge, which didn't seem right at all. No danger of being ahead of any curves now, and certainly no danger of me being in any way concise.
A la mode it isn't then, but it is at least topical, the World Cup being an actual current event. Not that it's only about that. Digression being the only literary device I've ever truly grasped, I've been known to wander off onto subjects from Korean naming laws to nematode worms. I hope you'll bear with me, I'm partly writing for people I know, and lots of people I know don't much care for football.
I've decided to try and get away from the whole match report thing this time. In previous blogs I've ended up just describing events on the pitch, which is fine, but there are plenty of other people doing that. Also, there are too many events for one person to properly describe, especially in the early phase.
This means that if a game is so rubbish I've got nothing to say about it, I just won't say it. Occasionally I won't be saying a lot. I may repost a few things from previous tournament blogs just to keep you entertained. Hopefully I'll be getting a new audience who haven't read them, and even if you have it was years ago, so hopefully you won't mind too much.
I'm sensing this blog may be a bit more political than my last one. World Cups seem to be more controversial these days, and it would be cowardly not to address that. I do hope it doesn't cause too much unpleasantness in the comments. The troglodytes have been even brasher than normal since the Euro elections. If they annoy us (or more accurately me) I'll just throw them out, but I'd rather not.
If you are a troglodyte, please read the comments policy to your right. Yes, that's all you're getting. Good luck.
Everyone else is very welcome.
Great to see your blog back, Jon. Looking forward to the tournament even more now!
ReplyDeleteCheers Dave. You've achieved something that would be beyond me.
